Mount Olive Baptist Church of Mauvilla was established in 1872 by a small group inspired by the Holy Spirit. Initially organized to serve the spiritual needs of the Mauvilla community, the church began under the leadership of Rev. T.L. Lucius, its founder and builder. Over the years, the church grew under the guidance of several pastors and dedicated members who contributed to its spiritual and physical development.
In 1908, land was purchased to construct a permanent structure, marking the church’s first major milestone. Significant renovations and expansions occurred during Rev. J.W. Smith’s tenure in the 1920s, including the laying of a cornerstone to commemorate these efforts. Subsequent pastors, including Rev. Charles Jackson, Rev. Shields, Rev. J.G. Gary, and Rev. J.D. Davis, continued to expand the church’s facilities and programs.
Under Rev. J.D. Davis (1970–1988), the church completed a new sanctuary equipped with modern amenities. He also established new ministries and programs, including youth and senior choirs and community outreach initiatives. Rev. Davis’s leadership laid the groundwork for the church’s growth in both membership and mission.
In 1988, Rev. Alphonso Brady, Sr., became pastor, ushering in a period of revitalization and expansion. His administration saw the renovation of the sanctuary, the construction of a fellowship hall, and the establishment of a scholarship fund. A recreational facility was built in 1998 as part of “Project Five,” a vision to serve the community through recreation and education.
In 2009, the church completed a $1.5 million sanctuary, a testament to its growing congregation and faith-driven mission. Over the years, many deacons, trustees, musicians, and other church leaders have contributed to its success, ensuring the church remains a beacon of light in the community.
As MOBCM looks to the future, it remains committed to honoring its legacy and the 'Saints Gone By' while seeking to grow spiritually, numerically, and financially—always guided by its founding mission of faith and service.
